The Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) was a military conflict that was primarily waged between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan. A deep scar was left on Chinese soil after the flames of war raged through the ancient nation, destroying cities and slaughtering people. The war between China and Japan was at first a conflict in which no western powers were openly involved. The war made up the Chinese theater of the wider Pacific Theater of the Second World War.
